Mary Amos was born in Gloucester, England in 1748 to Gabriel and Amos. Mary married Michael Griffin, born Ireland in 1750, about 1783 near Gloucester. Their first two children, Ann and Nathaniel Griffin were born in England before they departed on the Third Fleet Ship, the Britannia in 1791. Thomas was born onboard on the journey to Australia and Lydia arrived three years later in 1794 in Sydney. Unfortunately, Mary died when Lydia was only six months old. It must have been very hard for her with the food shortages at the time in the early colony. The funeral service was held at St Phillips Church. Mary's burial is listed in Old Sydney Burial Ground - Inventory of Burials, 1792-1819 Burial GRIFFIN MARY 1794 Jul 2 RST: Free. RM: Britannia © Marie Heilbrunn 2007 |
