I am off to the Alice Springs Beanie Festival at the end of the month and have been busy knitting!

Materials Adult Beanies – 5.5mm needles, 1 ball of double knit and 4 balls of novelty yarns – this quantity will make 3-4 beanies.  Adult Beanies Cast on 81 stitches. Work garter stitch (knit each row), varying yarns, for about 10cm for flat top cap, or 15cm for round top or pointy top. Note: Slip the first stitch of each row!Shape top by slipping 1, [knit 2 tog, K6] to end,Knit 3 rows for round and pointy top, knit 1 row for flat top. Keep decreasing:Slip 1 , [knit 2 tog, K5] to end, knit 3 rows for pointy top, knot 2 rows for flat and round,Slip 1, [knit 2 tog, K4], continue in this way until 21 stitches remain. Slip 1, [knit 2 tog,], alternate rows, until 4 remain for point top, using hairy yarn for final few rows. When 8 stitches remain for flat and round top, thread needle through and finish off.Finishing off:Thread all loose strands back into knitted rows with a tapestry needle, then weave edges together, by pulling the thread through, keeping stripes even. DO NOT oversew edges, too untidy!  Baby Beanie, on RHS – 4mm needles and 5 ply yarn To fit ages 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 monthsCast on 81, (89);(97) stitches. Our QLD Holiday April - May 2007 PDF Print E-mail

We left on the 21st of April and headed north in great anticipation of a longed for seafood feast at Ballina. We made our purchases late afternoon and headed out to Alstonville and drove by our old holiday house there, then arrived at Surfers’ Paradise in time for dinner with friends.  After a lazy weekend there we drove to Brisbane on Monday and caught up with some business contacts and stayed the night near the Storey Bridge on Southbank. Tuesday we travelled to Hervey Bay and Wednesday to Bundaberg, visiting Bates descendants/family historians in both places. On Wednesday night it was a great thrill to stay the night at the Town of 1770, where Captain Cook repaired the hole in the bottom on the Endeavour in 1770. We spent Thursday night on the beach front at Yeppoon and then had three nights at Mackay at the Apex 40 Conference. We then had one night at Townsville (have to go back there!) and then headed west to Charters Towers and south to Emerald, Roma, Moree and back home. The outback colours were fantastic and the roads good. We saw lots of cattle in the ‘long paddock’, cotton and other crops and lots of road trains. Dennis was missing his home cooked meals and was very pleased to arrive home on Friday 4th of May!

Went down on the train Wednesday after WFHG library duty and had dinner with my daughter at a Japanese restaurant in Glebe Point Road. On Thursday I met Joan at SAG new premises 379 Kent Street at 11.30am – 2pm, after visiting the Convict Sites of Punishment Exhibition at the Hyde parks Barracks. Had lunch at the KENS site and checked out the Westpac Place Archaeological WalkI called in at St Philip's on my way to Richmond Villa and had a look inside, it is a lovely church, but they had no fresh flowers there! The front vestibule has some artefacts from the original St Philip's.I found a whole page of research at Richmond Villa on Harry Parsons the witness at Ann and Thomas' wedding (he was a first fleet marine on the Sirius, married Mary Swain 1796, convict arrived on the Pitt in 1792 with 7 years)I have been unable to find anything on Phebe Walton. The closest I have is:Phiere Walters, arrived on the Indispensable 1796, with 7 years at Gloucester 1794, aged 22. Nothing at all on BDM.I then walked up to the Mitchell and looked at the PRO Reel HO26 with the convicts birth date and place, but it was from 1791, so had the Hillsborough 1799 and Pitt 1792 Thomas Bates, but not ours! Then walked back to Wynyard and I got back to Wyong at 7.30pm for the WFHG meeting, home at 10pm.Update coming soon for the 12th of May! Trying to get as much info as possible on the one page.
