Mary’s maiden name has been previously published as AMOS, but no marriage to Michael GRIFFIN has been located. Perhaps they were married in Ireland before coming to England. Mary and Michael’s first two children, Ann, baptised 4 Aug 1794 at St Nicholas Church, Gloucester and Nathaniel, baptised 18 May 1788, their parents were recorded as Michael and Mary GRIFFIN, no maiden name was recorded for Mary. Michael transferred to the NSW Corps 28 Sep 1789 and the family sailed from Portsmouth 27 Mar 1791 on the Third Fleet ship Britannia arriving in Sydney Cove on 14 Oct 1791. The journey took 201 days under ships master Thomas Melville. Michael and Mary’s second son and third child, Thomas was born onboard on 2 April on the journey to Australia. Lydia was born three years later on 4 March 1794 in Sydney. Living conditions in the new colony were difficult and food was scarce at that time. Unfortunately, Mary died on 1 Sep 1794, when Lydia was only six months old. Her death is also mentioned in David Collin’s Account of the English Colony in NSW. Michael was out fishing in the lower part of the harbour at the time. Her funeral service was held at St Phillips Church, 2 September 1794, Mary Griffin, Soldiers wife. She was buried in the Old Sydney Burial Ground, now the site of the Sydney Town Hall in George Street, Sydney. Mary's burial is listed in Old Sydney Burial Ground - Inventory of Burials, 1792-1819 Burial GRIFFIN Mary 1794 Jul 2 RST: Free. RM: Britannia © Marie Heilbrunn 2010 |
